Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

  • Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

Children of a certain generation loved watching the PBS TV show featuring Fred Rogers and his Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.   I still find myself  humming his theme song when I think about being a good neighbor.  In his quiet gentle manner Mr. Rogers told how one act of kindness can grow to an entire neighborhood.

Today Daniel Tiger, the 4-year-old son of the original program’s puppet Daniel Striped Tiger, carries on Mister Rogers’ neighborhood themes with learning strategies incorporated in stories and in songs.

In one episode, Neighbor Day, Daniel’s Mom receives a gift from her neighbor and then she decides to share her favorite flower with her neighbors.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rb8n1zNyffg.

Singing a song and listening to a story about helping a neighbor are not only learning tools but also motivating opportunities for adults and children to share kindness to people living in the community. After listening to Mr. Rogers sing his classic song, won’t you show kindness to your neighbor?

It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood,
A beautiful day for a neighbor,
Would you be mine? Could you be mine?

It’s a neighborly day in this beautywood,
A neighborly day for a beauty,
Would you be mine? Could you be mine?

I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you,
I’ve always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.

So let’s make the most of this beautiful day,
Since we’re together, we might as well say,
Would you be mine? Could you be mine?
    Won’t you be my neighbor?

Won’t you please, won’t you please,
Please won’t you be my neighbor?
