My Way Or The Highway
Helicopter parents and micromanagers at work are not role models for parents who want to model compassion and kindness for children. The helicopter and micromanager send a strong message – perhaps an indirect one: “I do not trust your ability to perform and deliver the results I need.” Fear of consequences is not a positive motivator for kindness and compassion. Fear of consequences happens whenever:
- Desired results are not clearly stated.
- Unrealistic expectations are the criteria for performance.
- Preventing errors are more important than learning
A focus on learning rather than judging happens whenever:
- Desired results are clearly stated.
- Educated risks are encouraged.
- Independent decisions are expected.
- Consequences for actions are recognized.
Whenever it is challenging to stand by and see a child struggle to solve a problem, try to release the desire to control and “get it right.” Instead allow the child the freedom to learn. Your trust will make a heart connection and that is always right!
