Kindness In The Family
In order for a family to flourish, each member of the family must also flourish. Each member of a family, whether blood-related or a family member of choice, has a different function within the unit. If we believe each member of the family is important, we choose to promoting kindness and compassion with one another.
When we broaden the definition of family to include the world community, we may recognize that each nation has a different function and has something to offer to other nations but there is not a sense of interdependence. Compassion and kindness flourish whenever we feel this connection, this interdependence. How can we connect with people who are different from us: speak a different language, live in a different culture, and have different values?
It does not have to be complicated if we keep our focus on understanding ways we can flourish together as a family. Once we honor how the efforts of one nation benefit us and how what we do benefits them, it makes it easier to connect with individuals and to act with kindness and compassion. Will there be diverse points of view about how to meet one another’s needs? Of course, all families have disagreements. But when we seek ways the expanded family can flourish rather than how we can defeat one member at the expense of another, there can be honest dialogue with heart-felt listening to all points of view.
There may be imposing barriers for specific ways to honor one another. As long as we are not harming one another, kindness can flourish – no matter what size the family.
