Do As I Do

  • Do As I Do

When children are very young, they imitate the behavior of adults and children around them.  They learn to walk and talk through observation and imitation. As they get older, adults encourage children to explore new opportunities, take classes, participate in sports, and join organization in order to better determine their unique talents and skills. At the same time, however, children hear adults talking about the “weird kid” or the “odd person.” There is a mixed message:  an appreciation for knowing your talents and skills but goals, values, and behavior should be similar to the adults or children around you. It is a challenge for adults who care for children to not only respect individual styles but also to guide appropriate behavior.  Respect and compassion for a child helps to develop an independent thinker and a child with strong character.
