CORBILINA VISITS PUEBLO OF ACOMA

  • CORBILINA VISITS PUEBLO OF ACOMA

    Acoma seal

On her trip to California, Corbilina visited with Camille at the Pueblo of Acoma in New Mexico.  Camille is a member of the Acoma tribe in Pueblo of Acoma and has lived in the community all of her life.  The Pueblo of Acoma has been continuously occupied since at least A.D. 1200.

Camille spoke about the Sky City Community School which serves over 200 students in grades K-8. The students live in the Pueblo and in neighboring tribal communities. Camille told Corbilina how the students show kindness to one another in their school.

Corbilina loved the school’s mission statement shown on their website: “Knowledge is power through Success, Communication, Commitment and safety for our community!” (http://www.sccs.bie.edu/about.htm)

The Acoma Keres language helped to lead the US to victory in World War II. To learn more about the “code talkers,” check out (http://flickrhivemind.net/Tags/acoma,museum)

Thanks, Camille for a great visit!
