BEYOND THE BROKEN WINDOWS
Recently I read a wonderful book to a Second Grade Class. It was Last Stop On Market Street with words by Matt De La Pena and pictures by Christian Robinson. This is a beautiful story of a grandmother and her grandson who ride a city bus on a rainy day. They pass neighborhoods with broken windows and sidewalks littered with trash. When the child (CJ) complains to his grandmother (Nana) about the ugliness, she points out beauty around them – a rainbow in the sky.
Corbilina loves heart shapes in nature and reminds us to focus on seeing beauty around us. No matter where we are, a rainy day with sadness can be transformed into a bright day with gladness – if we just look for the beauty.
